Thinking Skills for Creative Innovation

This course explores the principles of critical, analytical and creative interpretation of creative tasks to achieve innovative breakthroughs.  The course focuses on the role of critical, analytical and creative thinking for innovation and how these thinking processes drive one into action such as decision-making and problem solving.  The course will examine the use of the thinking skills to find new solutions to deal with problems for which known solutions do not apply.

Essential Thinking Skills for Creativity

This course reviews the role of critical thinking, analytical thinking and creative thinking for creativity and examines how the human mind takes in, organise and process information for different purposes. The course focuses on the cognitive thinking processes that drive one into action, and explore the principles of good thinking and its relationship to effective thinking for action/behaviour that enhance professional capabilities and creativity.

Insightful Thinking

This course explores Gestalt psychology and cognitive science theories to examine the phenomenon of insight, which is the sudden and unexpected realisation of a solution to a problem, to find new solutions to deal with new problems for which known solutions do not apply.

Mental Synthesis

This courses examines how mentally combining images and inducing subtle details into the images, scanning the images to note those details in different perspectives can induce highly creative emergent features or patterns that can greatly enhance the ability to make new discoveries.

Reverse Thinking

This course examines how novel patterns and forms can be developed by ‘reverse thinking’ action when de-synthesising into basic parts and elements the spatial relations and memories which are encapsulated in an artefact during the process of its making, and how the action can challenge assumptions that obstructs effective design thinking.

Creative Improvisation

This course examines how we can leverage on the intrinsic capability of our ordinary mental processes that are part of our daily cognitive repertoire of accumulating knowledge, organising our experiences and recalling our memories to solve design problems from the simplest to the most complex, and also to generate design ideas.
